Because we count scenes we have actually parsed. Work from the 1990s and 2000s often sits on sites that closed, and those scenes exist nowhere in machine-readable form. A measured figure beats an estimate.

Are these performers still shooting?

Most are not. Career status is stated on each profile, and on this page it reads retired or inactive more often than active.

Why do so many of these scenes use condoms?
